Enhancing Your Decor with Decorative Trays

In the realm of interior design, creating a visually appealing and cohesive space is a true art form. One of the key elements that can instantly elevate the aesthetics of your home is a well-curated vignette. And when it comes to perfecting the art of vignettes, a decorative tray serves as an indispensable tool. Let’s talk about it… the importance of using a decorative tray for your vignettes and how it can transform your home décor.

Organization and Structure:

Decorative trays act as a foundation for your vignettes. I like to say that it grounds your objects, providing structure and organization to the items you display. Whether it’s a coffee table, a console table, or a bedside table, a tray can help corral and group together various decorative objects, creating a sense of purpose and coherence. By placing items on a tray, you avoid a cluttered appearance and give your vignette a refined and intentional look.

Focal Point and Visual Interest:

A decorative tray can serve as a focal point within your vignette, drawing attention and adding visual interest. With its unique design, material, or color, a well-chosen tray can become a statement piece in itself. It acts as a canvas on which you can arrange and display your favorite items, such as candles, books, small sculptures, or your favorite vase. By using a decorative tray, you create a designated space that commands attention and invites admiration.

Versatility and Flexibility:

One of the great advantages of using a decorative tray is its versatility. You can easily change and update your vignette by swapping out the objects on the tray, allowing you to refresh your décor without much effort. Whether you want to celebrate the changing seasons, or showcase your latest finds, a decorative tray offers a versatile platform for creativity. It grants you the freedom to rearrange and experiment with various items, textures, and colors until you achieve the desired look and feel.

Cohesion and Harmony:

A well-curated vignette can tie together different design elements in a room, creating a sense of cohesion and harmony. A decorative tray serves as a unifying element that brings together disparate objects and anchors them visually. By choosing a tray that complements your existing décor, such as matching its color scheme or material with other elements in the room, you establish a cohesive aesthetic. This cohesiveness enhances the overall ambiance and makes your space feel thoughtfully designed.

Practicality and Functionality:

Beyond its aesthetic value, a decorative tray also offers practicality and functionality. It provides a designated space to keep everyday essentials organized and easily accessible. For instance, on a bedside table, a tray can hold a small vase for flowers, a favorite book, a scented candle, or your morning cup of tea. By incorporating functionality into your vignettes, you ensure that they serve a purpose while still looking visually pleasing.

In the realm of interior design, every detail counts, and a decorative tray can make a significant impact on your vignettes. It adds structure, visual interest, and cohesion to your display, elevating your home décor to a new level of sophistication. By utilizing a decorative tray, you not only create a visually appealing arrangement but also infuse practicality and versatility into your space. So, don’t underestimate the power of a well-chosen tray; it can transform your vignettes from ordinary to extraordinary, making your home a true reflection of your personal style and taste.

Powder Bath

Taking a risk with the design in our powder bath was definitely a fun and rewarding experience! We recently updated our powder bath from builder grade to full of personality.

The first thing I selected that set the tone of this space was the wallpaper. It’s bold, eye catching and like nothing else in the rest of our home. I wanted to push myself a bit out of my comfort zone in this space. I have to say, anytime I feature this space the number one question I get is, “where is the wallpaper from“?

I then selected a new vanity sink. I needed to add some texture to this space and the distressed wood shelves provided just that. I absolutely love the modern and rustic elements that the vanity sink brings to the powder bath.

I also needed to balance out all the straight lines with some rounded edges. The light fixture perfectly fits the bold vibe of this space with the glass globes, as well as the brass and black accents. An arched mirror was also a must when designing this space in order to soften the lines.

To complete the update, accents and decor were added. A small arrangement of faux flowers to also bring a softness to the space. A decorative tray is always a must for me to hold hand soap, tissue, a candle or decorative containers.

Pro tip: When designing a bold powder bath, choose one standout element as the focal point, and let the other begin element, like fixtures and accessories, complement and enhance it rather than complete with it.

DIY: Create an Outdoor Ambiance

If you’re looking to transform your outdoor space into a tranquil oasis, there’s a simple and charming DIY project that can make a significant impact. By repurposing a dough bowl and combining it with rocks and candles, you can create a stunning outdoor arrangement that exudes natural beauty and serenity. Let’s dive into this simple DYI of making this eye-catching centerpiece, perfect for adding a touch of ambiance to your outdoor gatherings or moments of relaxation.

Materials Needed:

  1. Dough bowl (size and shape of your preference)
  2. Assorted rocks or pebbles
  3. Candles (varying heights and size

Select a Dough Bowl:

Choose a dough bowl, the size and shape of the bowl can vary depending on your personal preference and the available space. I like one with a rustic or natural finish, as it will blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Arrange the Rocks:

Place a layer of rocks or pebbles at the bottom of the dough bowl. This layer will act as a stable base for the candles and provide visual interest. You can choose rocks in various shapes, sizes, and colors to create an appealing arrangement. If you have a large dough bowl like mine, I suggest adding a filler at the bottom so you don’t have to use as many rocks. I used old curtains and then layered the rocks on top.

Position the Candles:

Did you guess add the candles to the dough bowl? Yep! Opt for candles of different heights and sizes to create visual depth. For this arrangement I like pillar candles, or even tea-lights can be used, depending on the desired effect and size of bowl. Arrange them amidst the rocks, ensuring they stand securely. Pro-Tip: you can achieve the same vibe with flameless candles.

Light Up and Enjoy:

As the sun sets, light the candles in your dough bowl arrangement to create a warm glow. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the serene ambiance that your DIY creation brings to your outdoor environment.

Creating a captivating outdoor arrangement doesn’t have to be complicated. With a dough bowl, rocks, and candles, you can easily craft a centerpiece that adds a touch of tranquility to your outdoor space.

The Art of Shelf Styling

Shelves are not just for storage; they can be the perfect canvas for showcasing your creativity and adding a touch of personality to any space. Whether you have a bookshelf, wall-mounted shelves, or a freestanding unit, mastering the art of shelf styling can elevate the overall aesthetic of your room. Let’s talk about some practical tips and inspiring ideas to help you style your shelves like a pro.

Start with a Clean Slate

Before diving into the styling process, declutter and clean your shelves. Remove all items and take the opportunity to organize and edit your collection. This will provide a fresh foundation to work with and ensure that your styled shelves are visually appealing

Select a Color Palette

Creating a cohesive look is key to successful shelf styling. Choose a color palette that complements your room’s overall theme or matches your personal style. Opt for a combination of two to three colors that work harmoniously together. This will help create balance and visual interest on your shelves

Mix and Match

Avoid placing similar-sized objects next to each other. Instead, mix up the scale and heights of your items to create visual variety. Combine tall and short objects, stack books horizontally and vertically, and experiment with different shapes and textures. This diversity will add depth and dimension to your shelves.

Balance and Symmetry

Achieving balance is crucial when styling shelves. Consider the overall composition of your shelves and aim for a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. For symmetrical styling, mirror items on both sides of the shelf. Asymmetrical styling allows for a more relaxed and eclectic look, which I personally perfer. When using asymmetry make sure there is still a sense of equilibrium.

The Zig Zag Technique

For an asymmetrical arrangement, the zig zag technique works every time to ensure that sense of equilibrium. The goal is to make the eye bounce back and forth as they take in your design. Create height altering vignettes and place them diagonally from each other. Use a similar color scheme diagonally from each other.

Incorporate Personal Items

To give your shelves a personal touch, include items that reflect your interests and hobbies. Showcase your favorite books or a sentimental vintage objects. These personal elements will make your shelves unique and tell a story about you.

Play with Layers

Creating depth and visual interest is essential in shelf styling. Layer items by placing smaller objects in front of larger ones. This technique adds depth and makes your shelves visually appealing.

Pay Attention to Negative Space

While it’s essential to fill your shelves with curated items, leaving some negative space is equally important. Negative space helps create a sense of balance and prevents overcrowding. Allow your items to breathe and give each piece its deserved spotlight.

Regularly Refresh

Styling shelves is an ongoing process, so don’t be afraid to switch things up from time to time. Rearrange objects, introduce new items, or experiment with different color schemes. This way, your shelves will always feel fresh and exciting.

Remember to be creative, trust your instincts, and have fun while styling. The art of shelf styling is an opportunity to express your personality and elevate the overall aesthetic of your space. So, go ahead and showcase your style with confidence!

Styling your Coffee Table Like a Pro

The coffee table is often the centerpiece of a living room or lounge area. It serves as a functional surface for drinks, books, and other items, but it can also be an opportunity to showcase your personal style and create a visually appealing arrangement. With a few key elements and some thoughtful design choices, you can transform your coffee table into a stylish and curated focal point.

Start with a Clean Canvas:

Before diving into the styling process, start by clearing off your coffee table completely. Remove any clutter or unnecessary items to create a blank canvas. This will allow you to have a fresh perspective and make intentional design choices.

Your Style:

Consider the overall style of your room and let it guide your coffee table styling. Whether your space is modern, minimalist, or traditional, ensure that your coffee table’s design elements complement the overall aesthetic. This will create a cohesive look throughout the room.

Layer with a Tray:

One of the easiest ways to add structure and organization to your coffee table is by using a decorative tray as a base. Choose a tray that fits the scale of your table and matches your style. This will provide a designated space for smaller items and help anchor the arrangement. It makes a world of a difference, your want to avoiding what I call, “floating decor”.

Add Books and Magazines:

Coffee table books and magazines are not only great sources of inspiration but also add visual interest and height variation to your arrangement. Select books that align with your interests, whether it’s art, photography, fashion, or travel. Stack them horizontally and vertically, and consider placing a small decorative object on top.

Incorporate Natural Elements:

Bring a touch of nature to your coffee table by including natural elements like fresh flowers, or even a bowl with moss balls. These organic elements will add life and freshness to the space, making it feel more inviting.

Introduce Decorative Objects:

Select a few decorative objects that reflect your personality and style. This can include items like candles, sculptures, or vases. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and textures to create an eclectic yet cohesive arrangement. Remember to consider the scale of your table and avoid overcrowding it.

One of my personal staples when styling my coffee table are candles. Whether they are taper candles or a small scented candles, they not only add a warm and inviting ambiance but also act as decorative pieces on a coffee table. Choose scented or unscented candles, depending on your preference, and opt for different heights and styles to create visual interest.

Play with Textures and Fabrics:

Introduce various textures and fabrics to add depth and interest to your coffee table. Incorporate items like a decorative tray with a textured surface, or a set of stylish coasters made from different materials. These small details can make a significant impact on the overall look and feel.

Styling a coffee table allows you to express your creativity and showcase your personal style. By following these tips and incorporating elements that resonate with you, you can transform your coffee table into a beautifully curated focal point in your living space. Remember to consider scale, balance, and the overall aesthetic of the room, and don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with the process. With a little creativity and attention to detail, your coffee table will become a conversation piece and a reflection of your unique taste and personality.

Formal Dining

Formal Dining Room

I love to entertain, so a formal dining room was a must for our house! I love being able to host holidays, dinner parties, or just family and friends over for a week night dinner.

While a formal dining room was a must for me, I don’t necessarily want it to feel “formal” or stiff”. Insert a round dining table that instantly makes the space feel relaxed and intimate. A round dining table also helped maximize the available space we had and it allowed for better movement around the table.

Many memories are made in this room over yummy meals! It’s always a treat for the boys when we eat here because it feels a little more “special”, even if it’s just a weekend breakfast.

Pro Tip: Consider the size and scale of furniture and decor elements to ensure a balanced and visually appealing dining room.

Breakfast/Kitchen

In the symphony of daily life, our kitchens resonate as the beating heart of our homes. Beyond mere functionality, they embody a harmonious blend of aesthetics and purpose, creating a space that not only caters to our latest recipes but it’s also where we gather with family and friends.

Like yours, our kitchen is the gathering spot and where many laughs have been shared. Every moment is a recipe for cherished moments.

While we love our formal dining, our breakfast room is our everyday hang out spot. We love this area off the kitchen to eat breakfast as a family, have lunch, or just sit and talk. It’s also known as the craft table, homework zone and everything in between for the kiddos. Simply put, it’s perfect for the every day life.

William’s Room

William’s room is his absolute favorite room in the house! My number 1 goal when updating his bedroom was to make sure it will grow with him. It needed to feel mature and masculine with richer and warmer tones, but that also keeping the boyish charm through the accessories in his room. The wood paneling was a DYI and I love the way it turned out. It adds that masculine vibe and the cane bed provides warmth and texture.

Channeling that classic, masculine look, this dresser is by far the most unique piece in his room. Mixing old and new is always a good thing in design, and this vintage inspired steamer trunk dresser fits the overall look perfectly. I styled it with accents that draw in the other colors present throughout his room.

Pro Tip: Create an adaptable bedroom for your child with a good foundation that can easily be customized with the decor and accessories.

Mantel Styling

The fireplace mantle serves as a prominent focal point in a room, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase your personal style and elevate the overall aesthetic. I frequently get asked for mantle styling tips, so let’s talk about it. Let me share some valuable tips and ideas to help you style your mantle like a pro, creating a visually appealing display, while enhancing the ambiance of your space.

* Click Image for Link*

Start with a Clean Slate:

I always say start by clearing off your mantle completely. Remove any existing decor to create a blank canvas. This allows you to envision new possibilities and work with a fresh perspective.

Establish a Focal Point:

Determine the focal point of your mantle—a standout piece that grabs attention. The most popular are typically a large mirror, or artwork. The focal point will set the tone for the entire display and serve as an anchor for other decorative elements. Choose pieces that complement the style of the room and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. Artwork can be leaned against the wall for a more casual look, while mirrors can add depth and reflect light, making the space feel more open.

Create Height and Balance:

To achieve a visually pleasing arrangement, consider the height and balance of the objects you choose. Place taller items at the ends of the mantle, gradually decreasing in height toward the center. This creates a sense of balance and symmetry. Use objects of varying heights, such as candlesticks, vases, or sculptures, to add interest and dimension.

Layer with Decorative Items:

Layering is key to achieving a well-curated look. Arrange smaller decorative objects in front of the focal point to create depth and visual interest. Play with different textures, colors, and shapes to create an eclectic yet cohesive arrangement.

Incorporate Natural Elements:

Adding natural elements to your mantle display brings a touch of life and freshness to the space. Fresh or faux greenery, or branches in a vase are my personal favorite. This adds a sense of natural beauty and can be changed seasonally to reflect the time of year.

Consider Symmetry or Asymmetry:

Decide whether you want to style your mantle with a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. Symmetry creates a formal and balanced look, where objects are mirrored on both sides of the focal point. Asymmetry, on the other hand, creates a more relaxed and dynamic display, where objects are placed off-center and balanced with varying heights and sizes.

Pay Attention to Scale and Proportion:

Ensure that the size of the objects you choose is appropriate for the scale of your mantle. A large mantle can accommodate bigger and more substantial pieces, while a smaller mantle may require more petite and delicate items. Maintain a balance between the size of the mantle and the objects you place on it to achieve visual harmony.

And Finally:

Using these tips while also incorporating your personal style, can help transform your mantle into a visually striking display that enhances the overall aesthetic of your space. Experiment with different objects, textures, and arrangements until you achieve a look that reflects your taste and complements the style of your room. With careful thought and attention to detail, your mantle will become a reflection of your unique style and personality.

Most Recent Living Room

The living room is definitely where we spend the most quality time. Staying true to my heart I like keeping this space light and airy while maintaining a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for all of us to hang out in. Textures and fabrics are the name of the game here. The throw pillows and blankets are changed out seasonly, and the leather sofa add a richness to the space that I can’t get enough of. Styling my coffee table and mantle are two of my favorite places to change up in the house. Make sure you check out my other posts for my styling tips!

This is the perfect view from the living room. You can get a sense for the added textures and the warm inviting neutrals. I also love the added greenery to give the room some life.
