Styling your Coffee Table Like a Pro

The coffee table is often the centerpiece of a living room or lounge area. It serves as a functional surface for drinks, books, and other items, but it can also be an opportunity to showcase your personal style and create a visually appealing arrangement. With a few key elements and some thoughtful design choices, you can transform your coffee table into a stylish and curated focal point.

Start with a Clean Canvas:

Before diving into the styling process, start by clearing off your coffee table completely. Remove any clutter or unnecessary items to create a blank canvas. This will allow you to have a fresh perspective and make intentional design choices.

Your Style:

Consider the overall style of your room and let it guide your coffee table styling. Whether your space is modern, minimalist, or traditional, ensure that your coffee table’s design elements complement the overall aesthetic. This will create a cohesive look throughout the room.

Layer with a Tray:

One of the easiest ways to add structure and organization to your coffee table is by using a decorative tray as a base. Choose a tray that fits the scale of your table and matches your style. This will provide a designated space for smaller items and help anchor the arrangement. It makes a world of a difference, your want to avoiding what I call, “floating decor”.

Add Books and Magazines:

Coffee table books and magazines are not only great sources of inspiration but also add visual interest and height variation to your arrangement. Select books that align with your interests, whether it’s art, photography, fashion, or travel. Stack them horizontally and vertically, and consider placing a small decorative object on top.

Incorporate Natural Elements:

Bring a touch of nature to your coffee table by including natural elements like fresh flowers, or even a bowl with moss balls. These organic elements will add life and freshness to the space, making it feel more inviting.

Introduce Decorative Objects:

Select a few decorative objects that reflect your personality and style. This can include items like candles, sculptures, or vases. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and textures to create an eclectic yet cohesive arrangement. Remember to consider the scale of your table and avoid overcrowding it.

One of my personal staples when styling my coffee table are candles. Whether they are taper candles or a small scented candles, they not only add a warm and inviting ambiance but also act as decorative pieces on a coffee table. Choose scented or unscented candles, depending on your preference, and opt for different heights and styles to create visual interest.

Play with Textures and Fabrics:

Introduce various textures and fabrics to add depth and interest to your coffee table. Incorporate items like a decorative tray with a textured surface, or a set of stylish coasters made from different materials. These small details can make a significant impact on the overall look and feel.

Styling a coffee table allows you to express your creativity and showcase your personal style. By following these tips and incorporating elements that resonate with you, you can transform your coffee table into a beautifully curated focal point in your living space. Remember to consider scale, balance, and the overall aesthetic of the room, and don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with the process. With a little creativity and attention to detail, your coffee table will become a conversation piece and a reflection of your unique taste and personality.

Formal Dining

Formal Dining Room

I love to entertain, so a formal dining room was a must for our house! I love being able to host holidays, dinner parties, or just family and friends over for a week night dinner.

While a formal dining room was a must for me, I don’t necessarily want it to feel “formal” or stiff”. Insert a round dining table that instantly makes the space feel relaxed and intimate. A round dining table also helped maximize the available space we had and it allowed for better movement around the table.

Many memories are made in this room over yummy meals! It’s always a treat for the boys when we eat here because it feels a little more “special”, even if it’s just a weekend breakfast.

Pro Tip: Consider the size and scale of furniture and decor elements to ensure a balanced and visually appealing dining room.

Breakfast/Kitchen

In the symphony of daily life, our kitchens resonate as the beating heart of our homes. Beyond mere functionality, they embody a harmonious blend of aesthetics and purpose, creating a space that not only caters to our latest recipes but it’s also where we gather with family and friends.

Like yours, our kitchen is the gathering spot and where many laughs have been shared. Every moment is a recipe for cherished moments.

While we love our formal dining, our breakfast room is our everyday hang out spot. We love this area off the kitchen to eat breakfast as a family, have lunch, or just sit and talk. It’s also known as the craft table, homework zone and everything in between for the kiddos. Simply put, it’s perfect for the every day life.

William’s Room

William’s room is his absolute favorite room in the house! My number 1 goal when updating his bedroom was to make sure it will grow with him. It needed to feel mature and masculine with richer and warmer tones, but that also keeping the boyish charm through the accessories in his room. The wood paneling was a DYI and I love the way it turned out. It adds that masculine vibe and the cane bed provides warmth and texture.

Channeling that classic, masculine look, this dresser is by far the most unique piece in his room. Mixing old and new is always a good thing in design, and this vintage inspired steamer trunk dresser fits the overall look perfectly. I styled it with accents that draw in the other colors present throughout his room.

Pro Tip: Create an adaptable bedroom for your child with a good foundation that can easily be customized with the decor and accessories.

Mantel Styling

The fireplace mantle serves as a prominent focal point in a room, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase your personal style and elevate the overall aesthetic. I frequently get asked for mantle styling tips, so let’s talk about it. Let me share some valuable tips and ideas to help you style your mantle like a pro, creating a visually appealing display, while enhancing the ambiance of your space.

* Click Image for Link*

Start with a Clean Slate:

I always say start by clearing off your mantle completely. Remove any existing decor to create a blank canvas. This allows you to envision new possibilities and work with a fresh perspective.

Establish a Focal Point:

Determine the focal point of your mantle—a standout piece that grabs attention. The most popular are typically a large mirror, or artwork. The focal point will set the tone for the entire display and serve as an anchor for other decorative elements. Choose pieces that complement the style of the room and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. Artwork can be leaned against the wall for a more casual look, while mirrors can add depth and reflect light, making the space feel more open.

Create Height and Balance:

To achieve a visually pleasing arrangement, consider the height and balance of the objects you choose. Place taller items at the ends of the mantle, gradually decreasing in height toward the center. This creates a sense of balance and symmetry. Use objects of varying heights, such as candlesticks, vases, or sculptures, to add interest and dimension.

Layer with Decorative Items:

Layering is key to achieving a well-curated look. Arrange smaller decorative objects in front of the focal point to create depth and visual interest. Play with different textures, colors, and shapes to create an eclectic yet cohesive arrangement.

Incorporate Natural Elements:

Adding natural elements to your mantle display brings a touch of life and freshness to the space. Fresh or faux greenery, or branches in a vase are my personal favorite. This adds a sense of natural beauty and can be changed seasonally to reflect the time of year.

Consider Symmetry or Asymmetry:

Decide whether you want to style your mantle with a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. Symmetry creates a formal and balanced look, where objects are mirrored on both sides of the focal point. Asymmetry, on the other hand, creates a more relaxed and dynamic display, where objects are placed off-center and balanced with varying heights and sizes.

Pay Attention to Scale and Proportion:

Ensure that the size of the objects you choose is appropriate for the scale of your mantle. A large mantle can accommodate bigger and more substantial pieces, while a smaller mantle may require more petite and delicate items. Maintain a balance between the size of the mantle and the objects you place on it to achieve visual harmony.

And Finally:

Using these tips while also incorporating your personal style, can help transform your mantle into a visually striking display that enhances the overall aesthetic of your space. Experiment with different objects, textures, and arrangements until you achieve a look that reflects your taste and complements the style of your room. With careful thought and attention to detail, your mantle will become a reflection of your unique style and personality.

Most Recent Living Room

The living room is definitely where we spend the most quality time. Staying true to my heart I like keeping this space light and airy while maintaining a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for all of us to hang out in. Textures and fabrics are the name of the game here. The throw pillows and blankets are changed out seasonly, and the leather sofa add a richness to the space that I can’t get enough of. Styling my coffee table and mantle are two of my favorite places to change up in the house. Make sure you check out my other posts for my styling tips!

This is the perfect view from the living room. You can get a sense for the added textures and the warm inviting neutrals. I also love the added greenery to give the room some life.

Pro Tip: Keep your coffee table balanced, vary the scale of your items and stack or group like objects together.

Primary Bedroom Details

Our personal sanctuary… where, just like you, we unwind, relax and recharge here! By now you know that light and airy spaces make my heart happy and this room is just that. A neutral space gives me a sense of calm and not to mention helps the room feel brighter and more spacious. Which is something our primary bedroom lacks, it’s not a grand primary bedroom by any means. So keeping the furniture and accessories to a minimum is important here.

To help the space from feeling flat, I of course incorporated soft textures, an area rug to bring in a muted pop of color and fresh or faux greenery is always a favorite accessory of mine.

Pro Tip: By combing high-end and cost effective pieces you can achieve a curated look that reflects your personal style while being mindful of your budget.
