Console Styling: Tips for Creating an Elegant and Functional Space

Console tables are versatile pieces of furniture that can instantly elevate the style and functionality of any room. Whether placed in the entryway, living room, hallway, or even behind a sofa, consoles offer endless opportunities for styling and decorating. In this blog post, we’ll explore expert tips and tricks for mastering the art of console styling in your entryway.

Define Your Purpose:

Before diving into styling, consider the purpose of your console. Is it primarily decorative, functional, or a combination of both? Understanding its purpose will guide your styling choices and help create a cohesive look.

Balance Visual Weight

Achieving balance is essential for a well-styled console. If you have an open console with space underneath, consider adding ottomans or baskets to balance the visual weight from the top. These practical additions not only fill the space but also add texture and visual interest, while adding warmth and dimension to the space.

Create Symmetry

Symmetry is a timeless design principle that can instantly elevate the look of your console. To achieve symmetry, balance both sides of the console with similar elements. For example, a lamp with a vase on the opposite side or two lamps for a perfectly symmetrical look. I typically go for a lamp and vase combination for a less formal look.

Layer with Accessories

Layering accessories is key to adding depth and dimension to your console styling. Mix and match different heights, textures, and materials to create visual interest. Consider incorporating artwork, mirrors, decorative trays, and sculptural objects to enhance the overall aesthetic. I like to layer accessories with varying heights and textures, creating dynamic and visually appealing displays.

Incorporate Personal Touches

For an added personal touch to your entryway, try incorporating an item that reflects your personality and style. Display meaningful artwork, family photos, or cherished mementos to make the space uniquely yours. Including personalized elements will tell a story and evoke a sense of warmth and authenticity.

Pay Attention to Scale

When styling your console, consider the scale of the furniture and accessories. Ensure that the proportions are harmonious and that each element complements the overall size of the console. Avoid overcrowding the space with too many small items or overwhelming it with oversized pieces.

The console table I currently have is about 80″ wide and it’s important to take note that the mirror I added is also on the larger side (48″) to balance the scale, creating visually pleasing compositions that feels proportionate and well-balanced.

Edit and Revise

Finally, don’t be afraid to edit and revise your console styling until you achieve the desired look. Experiment with different arrangements, swap out accessories, and fine-tune the details until you achieve a cohesive and polished aesthetic.

Mastering the art of console styling requires a thoughtful approach and attention to detail. By following these tips, you can create an elegant and functional space that reflects your personal style and enhances the beauty of your home. So go ahead and transform your console into a stylish look that will leave a lasting impression.
