A few simple design principles that make your home feel more thoughtful, polished, and intentionally designed.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned over the years is that beautifully designed homes aren’t always filled with expensive furniture or perfectly styled decor.
More often than not, it’s the small details that make the biggest impact.
The way curtains frame a window. The scale of a piece of furniture. The height of a floral arrangement. These subtle choices can completely change how a room feels without requiring a full redesign.
These are a few designer tricks I come back to time and time again.
hang curtains higher and wider
If there’s one change that instantly elevates a room, it’s hanging your curtains correctly.
I always install curtain rods as close to the ceiling as possible to draw the eye upward and make the ceilings feel taller. Extending the rod 8–12 inches beyond each side of the window also allows more natural light in and makes the windows appear much larger. And finally, I always let the panels just kiss the floor, it creates a softer, more custom look.
invest in the pieces you use every day
Not every piece of furniture needs to be an investment, but the ones you use every single day absolutely should be.
Your sofa is one of the hardest-working pieces in your home. It’s where you gather with family, unwind at the end of the day, and spend countless hours throughout the week. Choosing a timeless, well-made sofa not only lasts longer, but it also creates a strong foundation for the entire room.
I always recommend investing in quality for these everyday pieces and layering in more affordable accents around them.
add height to your styling
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel professionally styled is by adding height.
Your eye naturally travels upward, so incorporating tall branches, oversized stems, or larger arrangements creates movement and makes a space feel more layered. It’s a simple trick I use throughout our home – from kitchen islands and dining tables to entry consoles and built-ins.
The best part is that these stems can be styled year-round and transition beautifully into fall.
repeat materials throughout the room
A home feels more cohesive when the same finishes and textures appear more than once.
Maybe it’s repeating warm wood tones, brushed brass accents, woven textures, or black details throughout a space. You don’t want everything to match perfectly, but you do want it to feel connected. Those repeated materials quietly tie a room together without making it feel overly designed.

One of my favorite designer tricks isn’t actually adding something, it’s taking something away.
Before buying more decor, try editing what you already have. Remove a few accessories, give pieces room to breathe, and focus on styling fewer, more meaningful items. A little negative space often makes a room feel more elevated than filling every surface.
